Negotiating change

Lifeworlds were pleased to be invited to contribute to the 'Building a Sustainable Funding Base' workshop being run by the Consortium of Development Education Centres and Think Global in Manchester on 8 July 2011. The event was described as follows:

"In the light of reduced funding and changes to statutory frameworks, to ensure our future survival, organisations concerned with global learning have to find new ways to raise funds, to develop self-funded services and have a strong strategic approach to future planning.

These workshops will provide a space for members to share strategies and ideas on diversifying income, service provision and strategic planning, with presentations from some members who have been successful in business planning and finding new ways to diversify. There will also be plenty of time for questions and small group discussion in order that we can bring forward the best ideas to share."

We were invited to share our experiences from outside of the DEC sector in developing alternative business models for working in a post-funding environment.

The workshop was vibrant and thought-provoking and participants responded well to our own input and the subsequent discussions. We hope this might lead to further engagement with DECs in the future.
